Sir William Hamilton, a New Zealander, developed the jetboat in the 1950s. He developed the first water jet system that allows a jetboat to draw in water from under the boat and expel it out the back through a nozzle, thus providing propulsion.

Of course, when any kind of vehicle is created that can go fast, it's not long before someone tries to race them, and jetboat racing became popular firstly in New Zealand on the natural braided rivers that were perfectly suited to the jetboats.

Because a jetboat can operate in just inches of water, and the braided rivers provided fast, sinuous courses, the experiences was exhilarating. Racing was formalised in 1981, with the races taking place on these rivers. However, when the concept was exported to Australia in the mid-1980s, the Australians built custom tracks for racing that would ensure consistency, and spectator satisfaction.

Jetboat courses are now the most popular even in New Zealand. The main countries that hold jetboat or jetsprint series are New Zealand, Australia and the USA.

The race format itself is similar to the game Jetsprint Legends: there are up to 25-30 changes of direction on what is essentially a lake with islands. A navigator shows the driver the way by pointing. Only one boat runs at any one time.

Jetboats fall into two classes which can only be described as insane and more insane. The lower Class A boats produce in the region of 650hp, which the bigger Super Class boats can produce up to 1400hp.

The boats are short, light and highly maneouvrable. The hulls have strakes that help with cornering by preventing the boats from sliding across the water. The g-forces are significant as the boat can stop in little more than its length, and accelerate to 100kph in less than 4 seconds. Crashes are common.

Jetboat racing is an awesome spectacle to watch, and if you get a chance to go in a jetboat, take it. In the meantime you'll have to be content with playing Jetsprint Legends.
